Dear Parents, Guardians and Students/Annwyl Rhieni, Gwarchodwyr a Myfyrwyr
Our Sixth Form community is a growing, inclusive and exceptionally valued part of our school. Our first item of business needs very little introduction. We are absolutely delighted to bring you the senior prefect team for 2024-25, in their own words….
We look forward to working with this team on many aspects of school vision, direction and strategy. They will be joining the Governing Body, sitting on recruitment panels, organising charity and community work, and so much more.
Each member of the team has already had a positive impact on our school community and we know that Steffan, Lola, Tom and Sarah will lead the team with passion.
Watch this space for more updates during their time in office!
Inaugural Shakespeare performance
Next today, we would like to commend Mr Wolverson’s and his Shakespeare players on a stunning two-night performance of Romeo and Juliet. The performance was word perfect, emotive and all consuming. The set and stage brought the audience fully into the dramatic production. Even though you know the ending is coming, it still moves you. There was also a very memorable fight scene on night one! A brilliant first performance by this extra-curricular group. It was an amazing performance and one that we will not forget in a hurry!
Year 7 take on Conflict and Protest….
Next today, as part of their studies on the Curriculum for Wales, Year 7 have been exploring their personal responses to the conflicts that are unfolding in the world around them. This is part of their Expressive Arts lessons.
Year 7 have responded with such maturity and such care.
They have been given the opportunity to express how they feel and their responses through various platforms, including art. They then took their protest around the school.
Here are some very vivid photographs of their protest in action…
Raising funds and awareness for Cancer Research, and a letter from the King
Next today we would like to say how proud we are of Lara Nur Uludag in Year 11. Lara (and family) recently received a letter from King Charles in recognition of their fundraising efforts. As part of a team of 5 students called “High Five, Lara has been actively participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. They organised a very successful Coronation Tea Party to raise an amazing £1,500 for Cancer Research Wales and Cancer Research UK.
Within the group of five, four members are aiming to study medicine in order to serve the people of Britain and to bring strength to the NHS. Having attended various health-related lectures, including the St John’s Oxford virtual study day and the Immunology conference at Cardiff University, they were inspired by the passion and dedication of scientists and researchers working tirelessly to find a cure for cancer. This experience motivated the group to act. Fundraising for Cancer Research seemed like the perfect way to make a meaningful impact.
They organised a neighbourhood garden party in celebration of the recent coronation. As a team they prepared the hosting garden’s grass to create an ideal surface for the tent. They decorated the garden in a Coronation and Cancer Research theme. They team far exceeded the amount that they hoped to raise. They are rightly proud of what they have accomplished so far, and hope to inspire others to take action and make a difference in the fight against cancer.
They believe that by coming together and supporting each other, we can make a positive impact and help those who are affected by this devastating disease. Here are just a few snapshots of Lara and team in action…..
Mae’r Adran Gymraeg wedi bod yn brysur iawn!
The Welsh Department have been very busy with a number of visits.
Just before half-term they were very fortunate to be invited to Howell’s School for their Welsh ‘Bore Coffi’ and also to meet Ioan Kidd, the author of ‘Angladd yn y Wlad’ a short story on the A Level syllabus. It was a fantastic opportunity to hear Ioan Kidd’s stories of his time as a journalist, working all over the world and a real insight into the background of the short story from the author himself. Diolch yn fawr Ysgol Howells a diolch yn fawr Ioan Kidd!
The Jonathan Show!
This week the Welsh Department took advantage of a great opportunity to be part of the audience at a live-recording of The Jonathan Show for S4C. This is a light-hearted rugby-based chat show hosted by Jonathan Davies alongside referee Nigel Owens and presenter Sarra Elgan.
The special guests on the evening were Jess Davies, model and TV and Radio presenter and Welsh rugby captain Jac Morgan. Our A-Level students also study Media and this was an amazing opportunity to experience a live studio and also to further enhance and develop their Welsh language skills.
The programme will be on air on Thursday 22nd February on S4C at 9.00 pm.
Pob lwc Cymru!
