Dear Parents, Guardians and Students/Annwyl Rhieni, Gwarchodwyr a Myfyrwyr
There have been so many different and inspiring activities taking place in the last fortnight that I need to cover events across multiple blogs this week! Starting with some problem solving! This first update come to us courtesy of Mr Denison-Kurg….
London Maths trip
We started early. All on the coach to London at 6am!
Our first visit was to the Twist Museum, where we saw optical illusions developed by artists, neuroscientists, philosophers and mathematicians.
No one could believe these were the same size until they actually placed one on top of the other. Alternating mirror strips meant our reflection was combined with someone else. There were kaleidoscopes big and small, a dinner party of clones, an infinite corridor, a room what made you shrink or grow and many more bizarre illusions!
Then we headed off to St Paul’s Cathedral for a workshop on architecture and the construction of St Paul’s Cathedral.
We then headed to the London Eye to see London from a different perspective.
Our final stop was for a nice meal out in London! The Sound Cafe had great food and amazing decor and a lot of live music! The perfect end to our day in London!
Thanks to Mrs Whitchurch, Mr Norey and Mr Denison-Kurg (accompanied by Mrs Thomas of School’s into Europe).
Representing South Wales at the UK National Hockey Festival!
Huge congratulations go to Seren Ellis and Ava Brattel who were selected to represent South Wales U13 Girls at the UK National Hockey Festival in Nottingham last weekend.
What a fantastic achievement! We were pleased to hear that the girls had the best weekend!
Being part of the South Wales Dragons squad has been such a fantastic, development experience for them, with friendships and many memories made. Well done both!!
Year 7 take on the Isle of Wight!
On Friday 12th July, LHS embarked on the most ambitious visit in history and a group of 200 set sail to PGL Little Canada on the Isle of Wight, where adrenaline fuelled adventures awaited…..
At first glance, the Little Canada camp looks quiet, peaceful and serene. You could even say it looks tranquil…..
And then, we arrived.
My new Chief Editor, Alan Nazemi (Year 7), has provided an introduction for us…
“For the End of Year trip, we chose the Isle of Wight! In this bewilderment of a trip, we had an idyllic time doing activities such as Abseiling, Archery, Giant Swing and many more. The photos down below will give an evocative explanation on how our trip was. We have amalgamated ourselves with new people, environments, and new skills. This trip was an educational reminder of all the things people can do if they try their best.”
As well as abseiling, archery, fencing, zip wiring and laser tag, we also enjoyed problem solving challenges and an activity called ‘survivor.’
As well as abseiling, archery, fencing, zip wiring and laser tag, we also enjoyed problem solving challenges and an activity called ‘survivor.’
Many of the challenges involved harnessing up and getting up high. Many of the Year 7’s overcame significant fear and challenged themselves to complete some really tough stuff.
It was amazing to see them supporting each other and offering that vital encouragement.
It was also amazing to see how proud they were as they conquered those fears.
On our final night, we were able to watch the game. Mixed feelings on that one. Probably the least said, the better! Also, the final night featured a disco. Alan Nazemi raised the bar with his sensational outfit. He was undoubtedly the king of the disco.
We were housed in cabins that we spent many hours patrolling! Sleep doesn’t come easily to excited Year 7’s. Every night, we thought ‘they have to crash tonight.’ Somehow, they powered through! They knew exactly where to find their group leaders…..
Even when things didn’t go exactly to plan, the group showed great resilience in the face of adversity. When faced with a wait in Portsmouth (as our coaches were stuck in traffic trying to reach us), an impromptu sing along of the Hokey Cokey even had the ladies in the restaurant behind us joining in with the actions.
We’ve had some wonderful experiences and have built lifelong friendships. Year 7 are most likely exhausted. I know the staff are.
Many of the activities involved the tricky process of getting into and out of a safety harness. I’ll leave you with our quote of the weekend from a student who will remain nameless….
“Me and my harness have a love-hate relationship. It’s like a stalker that follows me around, but keeps me safe at the same time.” Priceless.
LHS in New York
We are also pleased to report that LHS Sixth Form are having an amazing experience in New York. They are averaging 30,000 steps a day in 39 degrees of heat! Take care all. We look forward to hearing about your adventures when you return!
There will be one final blog coming your way tomorrow. Until then…
Thank you for reading/Diolch am ddarllen,
