Dear Parents, Guardians and Students/Annwyl Rhieni, Gwarchodwyr a Myfyrwyr

This week we bring you a blog that takes you from the dunes of Oxwich Bay, to the heart of some of the most challenging global issues, to a hug in a mug, and finishes with an incredibly powerful piece of poetry to celebrate International Women’s Day. Let’s waste no time in getting started…

Geography fieldwork

Last week the sun shone beautifully on our A Level Geographers for their adventures in fieldwork. The geography team led their annual pilgrimage to the dunes in Oxwich Bay to study the vegetation and features of the Psammosere succession there.

The sun shone for them on a cold day and students worked very well in groups to collect a range of accurate primary data. Cue a range of action shots!

LHS hitting hard at the European Youth Parliament regional forum

We started with the feel-good factor photographs.  Now we reassure ourselves yet again that there is great hope for the future as this generation are developing the skills, resilience and ingenuity to face the greatest challenges facing the globe.

On Friday 14th March, Mr Mann took 6 students to the European Youth Parliament regional forum in Cathays Community Centre. LHS took on Howells, Cardiff Sixth Form College, Whitmore, and Porthcawl in a series of debates about current global issues. The team did phenomenally well, impressing the judges with their confident arguments and rebuttals.

They impressed the judges so much that they were placed in the top two teams meaning they have secured a place at the UK finals in Liverpool in the summer.

The students who took part were Ruben Kelman, Fiona Garbutt, Hope Morgan, Maiwen Beynon-Bernard, Nehan Khan and Zayan Khan.

Nehan khan from Year 11 has reported back in his own words:

“Our school’s team shone brilliantly at the European Youth Parliament UK, triumphing in a fiery debate against schools all across South Wales. With both passion and perseverance, we proposed the cause of recidivism – emphasising that reintegration of former felons into society is vital for rehabilitation. Our rallying plea, “This is not about rejection – it’s about rehabilitation,” resonated deeply with the assembly, fostering a moment of heartfelt conviction.

This experience was more than just a debate – but an opportunity for team work and growth. The hard work of our team paid off, earning us the honour of representing our school at the nationals, where we will face competitors from all regions of the UK. A proud moment for Llanishen High!”

Well done team, we are exceptionally proud of you and look forward to following your exploits to Liverpool in July!

Here they are in action…

LHS does National Cyber Security!

As well as tackling global issues, on Friday 14th of March, 4 of our Year 12 Computer Science students competed in a National Cyber Security Competition hosted at Cardiff University. The students made the finals from the 1200 students who entered. They achieved second place for their region.  A fantastic achievement!  Congratulations go to Luke Kyriakou, Eron Latif, Denzel Ngwenya and Jacob Wood.

EISTEDDFOD Concert for LHS Cluster Primary Schools

On Wednesday the 12th of March, there was a warm croeso to the cluster primary schools visiting to attend our LHS Eisteddfod!!  We were so happy to see so many primary schools attending to the point where the West Wing Hall was full to capacity.

Thank you to Eloise Jenkins and Emma Ford in Year 9 for this wonderful write up and to Faith Lydall for being such an amazing help.

We had a star-studded programme jam-packed full of fantastic entertainment, including choir performances, solo singers and poetry recitals. Diolch yn fawr to Ton- yr- Ywen choir and their spectacular reindeer calling song, Thornhill and their mini choir, Coed Glas, Heol Llanishen Fach and Llysfaen for joining in with our cluster choir, Glyncoed for their amazing poetry and Bryn Celyn for their fabulous musical number. Da Iawn!!

We were blown away by our own performers here at Llanishen High, consisting of several poetry performances of our very own school choir and orchestra whose stellar performance of Valerie had us all clapping along and were rewarded with a standing ovation. A rendition of ‘Anfonaf Angel’ from Ruben Kelman and a memorable performance of American Idiot from our school band the Aggravated Lawnmowers, absolutely rocked our socks off!! Ardderchog !!

One to watch!

We would also like to commend Samuel Lewis in Year 7. Sam represented Cardiff Schools on a recent football tour to Portugal. Sam is definitely one to watch for the future! He is an excellent centre half and a true role model for Year 7.  Sam played really well, and as you can see from these photographs, it was a great experience.

International Day of Happiness

On Thursday 20th March we celebrated International Day of Happiness.

This reminded us that happiness isn’t about being happy all the time.  It’s about enjoying the moments that make you smile.

To celebrate, we snapped some our staff with their work bestie – because happiness is better when it is shared!

Please take a moment to appreciate those who make our school a little brighter.

A poem in honour of International Women’s Day

We finish today with something very special. Faith Lydall has written this fantastic poem in honour of International Women’s Day. I think you’ll agree that this is a brilliantly creative poem so I understand why Miss Lockwood is going to use this in her classroom teaching.

Well done Faith.

Girls just wanna have peace

She was eleven when she learned the green belt was not just for walkers, but stalkers,

Wolf whistles and shouts of ‘give us a smile’ followed her home

She crossed to the empty side of the road – not worth it for a shortcut

Chastised for not walking with a friend or charging her phone

Because boys will be boys

And girls just wanna have fun, don’t they?

She was thirteen when she learned about the thigh gap

That we need tutorials and make up for flawless skin

Girls should starve themselves to keep their stomach flat

‘Boys only go for girls who are thin’

Because boys will be boys

And girls just wanna have fun, don’t they?

She was eighteen when she learned to go with friends to the toilet

And to never risk walking alone through the park

Adding to a taxi’s profit, tired of being vigilant

Never wearing a short skirt and heels after dark

Because boys will be boys

And girls just wanna have fun, don’t they?

She was thirty when she learned about the pay difference

Bigger than the spread of a man’s legs on the bus

She’s ‘bossy’ if she displays her ideas or confidence

And no one like a woman who makes a fuss

Because boys will be boys

And girls just wanna have fun, don’t they?

From birth she’s learned that

Men react, women over-react

Men are passionate, women are emotional

Men are smart, women are lucky

But most importantly, boys will be boys should be better

And girls just wanna have fun peace
