Dear Parents, Guardians and Students/Annwyl Rhieni, Gwarchodwyr a Myfyrwyr

Spring has sprung in our LHS garden, with some ground breaking news!

Spring is well and truly upon us and the hard work that students have invested over the winter months is starting to bear fruit (and veg).

The beds in the polytunnel that Year 7 Health and Wellbeing classes have been competitively tending are really flourishing.  Which can only lead to one thing… some amazing aromas and sights in the Food and Technology lessons. Year 7 have completed their food assessment task to create a food app. Their ideas were extremely innovative and creative. Meanwhile, Year 10 were further developing their bread making skills and absolutely nailed the focaccia!  If you closed your eyes, you really would have believed you were in an Italian restaurant! Here are a few snaps from the last few weeks.

Meanwhile, if you’re struggling for ideas for dinner, look no further. Year 7 have designed an app for that!

Out in the polytunnel the herbs and vegetables are thriving.  Spring onions, peppers, chilli’s, garlic, beans, carrots, peas, and so much more.

A short step back into the Food area finds more Year 7’s working collaboratively to design our next iteration of bug hotels.  The detail that goes into the design is incredibly thoughtful. These will be very comfortable bugs! Their homes will be constructed using sustainable materials. Here are Year 7 at the planning stage.  We look forward to returning to this later in the year to see the construction in action and the finished hotels.

A first at LHS….

However, the most intriguing event of our week came on the morning of Tuesday 1st April when our resident chief horticulturalist, Mr Hurford, unearthed a vegetable that is a first for LHS.  A blue carrot.

Scientists have warned us about climate change affecting crops.  But we never expected this. Changes in the soil and temperature may have caused this rare phenomenon.  Could this be the future of sustainable farming? Or should we start supplying grocers with our LHS branded Veg?

If you are a keen gardener, novice or expert, keep your eyes out for blue carrots.

Awe inspiring talent!

Our massive congratulations go to Alicia Brody in Year 7. Alicia has recently been selected for the FAW girl’s squad.

This is an incredible achievement for such a fantastic young lady. Another excellent role model in Year 7!

Mr Emanuel always said she’d play for Wales!! Keep us posted Alicia!

With one more week until the Easter break, can we say how proud we are of the way that years 10, 11, 12 and 13 are studying and prepping for the summer exam period ahead. Short term pain for long term gain. Every lesson counts.

Years 7, 8 and 9 are not excluded.  They return to their Welsh National Tests in the week beginning 28th April. So again, every lesson counts.

We look forward to seeing everyone for the last week of the spring term, and we particularly look forward to welcoming Year 10 parents on Thursday 10th April for parents evening.

Until then, have a good weekend.
