1. Can you tell us your name and one interesting fact about yourself?
My name is Bhavik Patel. My interesting fact is that when interest rates first fell to 0.5% during the financial crisis in 2009, I bet Mr Edwards £5 that they would recover to 5% by the time I left LHS. I’ve not paid him yet.
2. What year did you graduate from Llanishen High School?
I graduated from LHS Sixth Form in 2011.
3. What subjects did you study or were you particularly interested in while you were with us?
I studied Mathematics, Economics, Physics and English Literature in Sixth Form.
4. What are you doing now, and can you tell us how you got to this point?
I’m a Director at Deloitte, specialising in advising on international tax matters for large corporate groups who engage in mergers and acquisitions. I joined Deloitte’s graduate scheme after leaving university.
5. Did you always know this career was something you wanted to pursue? If not, what other career options were you considering?
I didn’t know what I wanted to do until I started applying for graduate schemes. I also explored banking, law, and the civil service.
6. Looking back, what advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?
I would tell myself to explore in detail the wide range of potential career options out there. There are a huge number of careers I never even knew existed when I was 16 years of age.
7. What advice would you give to students today thinking about their future?
My advice is not to worry too much about what your career path will be. Instead, focus on gaining the right level of soft and technical skills to apply to whatever you end up doing. This will stand you in good stead for both your career as well as life more broadly!
